Montana Ale Works:
Highs: Excellent fish, good selection of beers
Lows: Soggy fish tacos, bland pasta dishes, loud
Bottom Line: 3/5 Consistently good but rarely excellent food
The cooks at Montana Ale Works are at their best with the fish and steak dishes. They have served me Halibut that was cooked with a sublime hand – perfectly done even all the way out to the corners – how do they do that!? Unfortunately, the halibut was paired with a bland, lackluster tomato sauce. I have sampled the the New York strip – again cooked perfectly but the accompanying rice pilaf was tasteless and over-cooked. While flavorful, the fish tacos were a mushy mess with a too-thin sauce dripping everywhere. The sauce penetrated the tortilla to the extent that the second taco didn’t hold together and had to be eaten with a fork. My experience with the Montana Ale Works “locally renown” pepper parmesan fries has been mixed. Sometimes they are cooked to perfection, other times they let the fryer temperature get too low and they are soaked in grease. The Pedro’s Pasta, apparently created by Pete himself is quite bland. Ditto the Mac and Cheese, I recommend loading it up with the optional bacon, spinach, and tomato.
Montana Ale Works – Drink: Montana Ale Works has a great selection of various area micro-brews and their mixed drinks are adequate but nothing to write home about. Once nice touch on their liquors is that there is nothing cheap in the whole bar, no gut-rot in the whole bar.
Montana Ale Works – Atmosphere: The atmosphere at Montana Ale Works is busy with a casual mixed-age crowd. This place is the busiest bar/restaurant in Bozeman, period. So if you like a crowd this is the place to be. On the bar end of Montana Ale Works there are some pool tables rented by the hour to pass the time. Bobcat is waiting with bated breath for the table tennis trend to arrive in Bozeman bars.
Speaking of waiting, waits for the restaurant can be lengthy, and the bar area seating is quite loud. If a quiet dinner you seek, reservations you must have, young Padowan.
Montana Ale Works – Summary: Montana Ale Works can be counted own for good food, drink and service, for groups large and small; but it rarely rises above.
